Ainslee O'Connell

Podiatrist

Ainslee graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine (Honours) and has been working in private practice since.

Ainslee completed her honours research in the biomechanical field, with her paper ‘The effect of dynamic movement tasks on the restrictive properties of rigid strapping tape’, being presented at the 2019 Australian Podiatry Conference. With a passion for all things lower limb, Ainslee has a special interest in musculoskeletal conditions, biomechanics, injury prevention and footwear prescription/advice. Outside of Podiatry Ainslee is a keen netballer and enjoys all things sport related.

Alannah Grimm

Physiotherapist

Alannah completed her Master of Physiotherapy studies in Canberra before moving to Harvey Bay to work in private practice. Allannah has a background in sports and exercise science and has completed several professional development courses, including Pilates mat work and APA Sports Physiotherapy Level 1 and 2. Alannah is always open to further expand her knowledge and experience and will be looking to undertake more courses soon. Alannah has previously worked with rugby union and soccer teams in Canberra but also enjoys all things running and swimming.

Alice Latham.

Neurological & Hip Rehab

Alice is a UK Qualified Physiotherapist, with over 5 years of National Health Service experience. She has a Sports and Exercise Science degree from Loughborough University and completed a Masters in Physiotherapy at the University of Southampton. She has experience working within acute, rehabilitation and community sectors. This includes general medical rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation both trauma and elective. As well as a specialist interest in Neurological Rehabilitation, Stroke and elder care. She has completed Post Graduate Stroke rehabilitation training, fall practitioner training in the UK and has an invested interest in Parkinson’s disease.

Alice has experience working within a community setting including nursing home, in-home post-op care and in-home neurological care as part of an Early supported discharge stroke team. 

Alice is a lover of all things active, getting outdoors and healthy living. She has been involved in competitive sports all her life, competing at national and international levels in Swimming, Running, Netball and most recently Triathlons. She has great interest and passion for rehabilitation and Exercise. She takes several exercise classes including, Move for Life, which includes balance rehabilitation, Neuro movers and Pilates. She also has experience and interest in Hydrotherapy.

Angela Farlam

Remedial Massage Therapist

Angela has been a passionate and focused health and fitness professional for over 20 years. Angela qualified in remedial massage, sports therapy and as a personal trainer in the UK in 1999 and spent 7 years practising there before moving here to the fabulous Sunshine Coast in 2006.

Angela draws on skills gained across a wealth of massage modalities including sports, deep tissue, remedial, relaxation, hot stone,  sports, head, facial plus kinesiology and reflexology.  As a keen runner herself, Angela has a special interest in the remediation of sports-related injuries as well as all aspects of therapy aimed at the prevention of issues in the first place.

Treating each client as unique, Angela listens carefully to understand the issue before designing and delivering treatments that are focussed specifically on the issue at hand. With extensive experience both as a practitioner and as an educator, Angela has taught massage courses as well as co-owned a running franchise in Noosa focusing on all levels of runner.

Andreas graduated as an Occupational Therapist (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy) from Southern Cross University on the Gold Coast. Exercise Physiologist

Annika is an enthusiastic Exercise Physiologist with a passion for improving patients quality of life through movement. Brad Staer

Lower Back Rehab

Since graduating from James Cook University in 2010 Brad has gained extensive experience working in the gym, private practice and sports team settings. He has worked in Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and more recently the Sunshine Coast. Brad is passionate about Physiotherapy and loves helping people, always striving for the best outcomes for his patients.

Brad is greatly interested in all areas of musculoskeletal Physiotherapy with a particular interest in acute, chronic and adolescent knees, sports injuries, chronic pain and spinal rehabilitation. He has undertaken further training in all of these fields, in addition to Dry Needling and Pilates.

Bruno Rebello

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Bruno is physiotherapist with over 15 years’ experience in the private practice setting. He graduated from his Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2003. In 2006 he completed his Post Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Bruno has also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

Some of the highlights of his career include:

– Physio part of the team caring for professional Brazilian Soccer player Ronaldo ‘Phenomenon’;
– Granted rights to practice Physiotherapy in Australia after completing the Australian Physiotherapy Council Exams, a well-known process in the industry due to its high standards;

Bruno is passionate about movement analysis and pain science. Cassandra Kennett

Cassie one of our recent additions to the team. She is a physiotherapist and new to the Sunshine Coast, having moved here just this year from Townsville. Cassie grew up in Townsville and completed her degree at James Cook University. Throughout university, she worked as a disability support worker, a job quite close to her heart as she was surrounded by the industry throughout her life as both of her parents were closely linked.

Cassie comes from a background of CrossFit and Olympic lifting and is crazy about all things gym and fitness. She trains at CrossFit the Stables and is starting up an Olympic lifting club and sessions at World Gym. She has been training and competing for the last two years with comps all over Queensland, and aims to do more at the end of the year. When she’s not in the gym, you can find her at Mooloolaba beach with her dog, Maia, having too many coffees.

Chelsea, Total Rehab Solutions Clinical Dietitian, has experience in aged care, private practice and recipe development. Chelsea thrives from supporting patients within the community to achieve their nutrition goals. Patients with a variety of nutritional needs are welcome to book with Chelsea. Cielo Kelley

Musculoskeletal & Lower Limb

Cielo (pronounced “Shell-o”) graduated from the Australian Catholic University with first class honours. Her research focused on how people cope after rupturing their anterior cruciate ligament – a major stabilising ligament in the knee. Cielo is passionate about providing high-quality treatment by keeping up to date with the latest research and applying the evidence-based practice. In 2017, Cielo was invited to present her thesis at the national Australian Physiotherapy Association Conference in Sydney held at the International Convention Centre. Her research is currently submitted for publication as the leading author.

She has since undertaken multiple professional development courses to continue broadening her knowledge on treating sports-related injuries more specifically to the knee. Cielo has a keen interest in treating dance- and sports-related injuries having undertaken eight years of classical ballet training under the Royal Academy of Dance. Cielo is passionate about using a holistic approach to help people get back on their feet and achieve their goals whether it is to improve daily function, return to recreational or competitive sports and or optimise general health and well-being.

Psychologist

Damien has completed a Master of Applied Psychology (Sport & Exercise) and a Master of Philosophy (Psychology) degree at the University of Queensland, Australia. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, an Associate Member of the College of Sport & Exercise Psychology, and a member of the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. Damien is registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. As well as this, Damien is a full Member of the College of Sport and Exercise Psychology and a Convenor of the APS Military and Emergency Services Interest Group. Damien came to psychology from a 19-year career in the emergency services sector at both the state and federal level. During this time, he worked in a variety of areas that called for excellence in performance and a dedication to achieving highly valued organisational outcomes.  Damien is registered to work within the Medicare, WorkCover Queensland, and private health insurance systems.

Emily Whitmore

Remedial Massage Therapist

Emily Whitmore graduated from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom in June 2012 achieving a first class honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science. She then went on to complete her Level 5 BTEC Professional Diploma in Clinical Sport and Remedial Massage Therapy at the London School of Sports Massage, qualifying in August 2013. She is also a qualified therapist in advanced Dry Needling.

Since qualifying Emily has worked as a Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist within Physiotherapy clinics in the United Kingdom. Her clinical experience also includes working with British Triathlon at their base in Loughborough; this has involved travelling overseas to training camps and European and World Triathlon events, helping to prevent injury and facilitate recovery from training and competition. Gemma is a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist having completed her Diploma with Q Academy on the Sunshine Coast. Gemma’s passion is to assist athlete’s and everyday athlete’s in improving their range of motion, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Hayley Wilkinson.

Hayley graduated with a Master of Physiotherapy Studies from the University of Queensland and also hold a Degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Ballarat.
Hayley has been working in Private Practice since finishing her studies. Having worked within Private Practice she has gained experience treating post operation total hip and knee replacements, whilst also seeing these patients in the clinic Hayley also completes Home Visits for patients in the early stage of their rehabilitation post surgery. Hayley also enjoys home visits to patients requiring Falls Prevention programs, these incorporate a mix of lower limb strengthening and balance exercises.

Jai Laroiya

Neurological Physiotherapy

Jai graduated from Griffith University in 2015 with a Master of Physiotherapy, after gaining his Bachelor of Exercise Science in 2013.

Prior to joining the Sports and Spinal team, Jai has worked at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital since 2016 and has acquired a strong interest in neurological Physiotherapy. Jai has continued to strengthen his skills by completing a range of neurological specialised courses and workshops.

Jai has been a local to the Sunshine Coast since 2016, enjoying the beach, surf and exploring all that Sunshine Coast has to offer.

Joanna Szczodry

General Physiotherapy

Joanna graduated her Master’s Degree in Neurological Rehabilitation in Poland in 2011 and since than she treated patients across three continents: in Europe, Canada, and finally in Australia.  Joanna has over 10 years of experience as a physiotherapist in hospital, neurological clinic and in aged care. She enjoys working with NDIS and neurological patients and has vast experience in rehabilitation. Joanna completed Watson Headache Approach in 2018 and since than she helped many patients with migraines and headaches. She continues pursuing her passion and will be participating in Level 2 Watson next year.

Koren West

Low Back & Spinal Rehab

Koren graduated from Bond University in 2009 with a Doctor of Physiotherapy.  During that time, she worked closely with Tennis Australia in Brisbane and the junior elite tennis players in the prevention of lower back and spine injuries.

Since graduating Koren has been focusing on spinal rehabilitation and in particular, acute and chronic lower back pain and has continued her education along this path.  Koren has a particular interest in managing patients with a holistic approach to their active rehabilitation using a multidisciplinary team. Koren is passionate about ensuring that every patient she sees is provided with education and a plan regarding their specific condition to assure their goals are met, leading to a greater recovery.

Koren also runs weekly group classes incorporating Pilates type exercises along with functional/physiotherapy exercises for core strength and stability which fits in perfectly with her lower back interest.

Luisa Grieco

Luisa is a lover of sports and completed both her Bachelor of Exercise Science and Masters of Physiotherapy at Griffith University here on the sunny Gold Coast. With 15 years of Ballet and 5 years of Aerobic Gymnastics Luisa enjoys combining her dancing background with her newfound interest in Pilates-based rehab. Along with this Luisa has enjoyed being involved with a number of sporting teams, with a passion for applying her physiotherapy skills to the Rugby Union and League Fields ranging from grassroots athletes and weekend warriors to the Queensland Cup State and WNRL level.

Luisa likes to use both a hands-on and exercise-based approach to helping people from all walks of life to achieve their goals and perform at their best. After sustaining a low back injury on the football field that left Matt unable to tie his shoes, Matt turned his attention from sport to studying Physiotherapy to give the others same experience that got him pain-free and back on the sporting field.

Mish is stepping into our newly formulated Allied Health Assistant role at Sports & Spinal and she could not be more excited. Her background is in Exercise and Sports Science, Yoga Teaching, Personal Training, and Remedial Massage. She has always had a passion for uplifting the lives of others through movement, health, and wellbeing. Mish has had experience working as a Personal Trainer in a Gym setting, as a Yoga Teacher, as a First Aider for a Sydney based AFL Team and as an Allied Health Assistant in a clinical setting assisting both Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists. Nick Hurrell.

Nick studied at Griffith University where he completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science and a Master of Physiotherapy.
He has a keen interest in sporting injuries which came through his own experience as a semi-professional rugby player as well as working closely with elite athletes from a range of sports. In the past, Nick has worked with the Gold Coast SUNS AFL team as well as contract work with a number of Rugby Union, NRL and NSWIS Diving teams.

Renee graduated from the University of Queensland in 2013 with first class honours. Her passion is for musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy, particularly acute injury management, spinal conditions and pre and post-natal patients. She also has extensive experience in clinical Pilates, teaching since 2013 and completing her APPI equipment certification in 2017.

Renee has a strong background in sport, currently participating in triathlons and running events on the Sunshine Coast. Sarah graduated from the University of Queensland in 2010. Since then she has worked in private practices both in Australia and in Europe, gaining valuable experience in manual therapy and exercise prescription to enable high-quality patient care. Siliva Tufuga

Lower Back & Spinal Rehab

Originally from New Zealand but graduating from The University of Queensland, Siliva has developed extensive international experience over 20 years of clinical practice including both Australia and the UK. In England, he was the team leader of a specialised group of advanced orthopaedic clinicians and helped to successfully develop the GP screening clinics and Injection Therapy service. Upon his return home, he has spent the past few years treating active Australian troops at the large military base in Enoggera, Brisbane where overloading of the spine and effective return to military service go hand-in-hand.

Accordingly, Siliva has vast knowledge in treating spinal disorders and low back pain. He enjoys working with his patients to identify and resolve their daily pain issues and implement strengthening strategies to prevent future occurrences.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his young family and is an IRB Level 2 rugby coach.

Tenikka completed her Clinical Exercise Science Degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast with a passion to help people manage their chronic disease or injury through evidence-based exercise prescription and education. Tenikka has a special interest in working with people with Type 2 Diabetes, osteoporosis, and low back pain. Tenikka has gained experience running cardiac, diabetes and hydrotherapy group classes and throughout her final year of study worked closely with paraplegics, neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Tim Boyle

Podiatrist

Tim graduated from the Queensland University of Technology as a Podiatrist in 2006. He has gained valuable experience over the last eight years working in a multidisciplinary sports medicine clinic. Within this setting, Tim had the pleasure of working alongside medical & allied health professionals including Sports Doctors, Physiotherapists, and Massage Therapists.

Tim enjoys a broad scope of podiatry including sports injuries of the lower limb, biomechanical assessments, gait analysis, orthotic therapy, footwear assessments and recommendations, diabetic foot assessments and treatment of conditions of the toenails and skin.  Tim is particularly passionate about running biomechanics and footwear advice/prescription, a special interest that commenced through his strong interest in athletics and involvement in the footwear industry.

Over the years Tim has treated a number of senior and junior athletes from a range of different sports, including 2 years treating both the Brisbane Roar and Brisbane Roar youth teams.

Tim is a sports enthusiast himself having been involved in a number of sports from a young age competing at a state level in Athletics and Basketball.

Zac graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast after completing his Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Science. Hydrotherapy is a supervised exercise program in a heated pool (32 degrees). Hydrotherapy can help relieve pain, promote relaxation, mobilise joints, strengthen muscles, develop balance and coordination, and improve general fitness. Some of the many conditions that benefit from an individualised hydrotherapy include:

  • Back pain

The New You group exercise class allows you to increase muscle tone and strength thus decreasing load and pain through joints, increase energy levels, reduce health risks (diabetes/heart disease) and increase self esteem and confidence in a social environment. You will have an individually tailored exercise program to suit your needs and goals that will be prescribed after the initial consult. You will be supervised throughout the entire session, ensuring correct technique, with a maximum of 6 people per class. ‘New You’ will benefit anyone looking to rehabilitate any old or new injury in a safe and supervised environment, lose weight, get active and social while learning great tips on managing your health and wellness.

Move4life is a small group class, run by fully qualified Exercise Physiologists with a focus on falls prevention and strength training for activities of daily living. Move4life focuses on:

  • Improving strength and mobility
  • Decreasing joint pain
  • Improving fitness by enhancing the efficiency of your heart and lunge
  • Facilitating weight loss
  • Improving sleep
  • Enhancing bone health and reducing fracture risk (important in the prevention and management of osteoporosis, reducing falls risk by improving your balance)

Exercise Physiologists are highly skilled in developing exercise programs to suit the needs of seniors and are particularly concerned with people who have a condition which limits them physically and affects their quality of life eg. Arthritis, stroke, fracture, osteoporosis or heart disease. Move4life gym classes provide an enjoyable and social environment with Exercise Physiology supervision to ensure the exercises are instructed and performed correctly.

NuroMovers class is run by a Physiotherapist with a special interest in neurological conditions and is targeted for patients with a neurological movement disorder. The class includes:

  • Specialised neurological physiotherapy assessment and ongoing treatment (outcome measures, with aim to work towards individual functional goals)
  • Evidence-based aerobic and functional exercise prescription
  • Evidence-based outcome measures, with aim to work towards individual functional goals
  • Ongoing information, knowledge and support for management of their condition
  • Progressive evidence-based home exercises
  • Encourage self-management and empowers patients in condition management
  • A  safe and supervised environment to participate in exercise and challenge themselves

Patients appropriate for this class:

  • Diagnosed neurological movement disorder (specifically targeting Parkinsons disease, mild to moderate Stroke and MS)
  • Require stable cardiovascular health and have clearance to participate in aerobic exercise
  • Safely ambulant with or without a walking aid independently or with minimal supervision
  • Cognitively be able to take instruction and participate in a class exercise program independently

Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and wellbeing through occupation. The primary goal of OT @ Sports & Spinal is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Our OT’s achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement

Our team here at Sports & Spinal can complete home-based client assessments and produce comprehensive reports, recommendations and treatment plans to support client’s diverse needs and meet their goals. This typically includes a comprehensive assessment on functional capacity, goal setting and planned intervention strategies to undertake a range of activities including:

  • Assessments (e.g. home safety assessments, falls assessments, functional assessments)
  • Equipment Prescription
  • Home Modification assessments and recommendations (major and minor)
  • Assistive Technology assessments and recommendations
  • Other education/training (e.g. Falls prevention, pain and fatigue management, activities of daily living retraining)

Services are provided to adults of all ages in their homes, as well as supported accommodation / residential care. Experience with a wide range of conditions including neurological conditions, orthopedic conditions, falls, arthritis, dementia, pressure injuries, post-surgery, and many more.
