Hydrotherapy is a supervised exercise program in a heated pool (32 degrees). Hydrotherapy can help relieve pain, promote relaxation, mobilise joints, strengthen muscles, develop balance and coordination, and improve general fitness. Some of the many conditions that benefit from an individualised hydrotherapy include:

  • Back pain
  • Balance/coordination problems
  • Arthritis (Osteo and Rheumatoid)
  • Rehabilitation after bone fracture, joint replacement tendon repair

The New You group exercise class allows you to increase muscle tone and strength thus decreasing load and pain through joints, increase energy levels, reduce health risks (diabetes/heart disease) and increase self esteem and confidence in a social environment. You will have an individually tailored exercise program to suit your needs and goals that will be prescribed after the initial consult. You will be supervised throughout the entire session, ensuring correct technique, with a maximum of 6 people per class. ‘New You’ will benefit anyone looking to rehabilitate any old or new injury in a safe and supervised environment, lose weight, get active and social while learning great tips on managing your health and wellness.

This program is about taking small steps to create big, lasting lifestyle changes for THE NEW YOU!

Move4life is a small group class, run by fully qualified Exercise Physiologists with a focus on falls prevention and strength training for activities of daily living. Move4life focuses on:

  • Improving strength and mobility
  • Decreasing joint pain
  • Improving fitness by enhancing the efficiency of your heart and lunge
  • Facilitating weight loss
  • Improving sleep
  • Enhancing bone health and reducing fracture risk (important in the prevention and management of osteoporosis, reducing falls risk by improving your balance)

Exercise Physiologists are highly skilled in developing exercise programs to suit the needs of seniors and are particularly concerned with people who have a condition which limits them physically and affects their quality of life eg. Arthritis, stroke, fracture, osteoporosis or heart disease. Move4life gym classes provide an enjoyable and social environment with Exercise Physiology supervision to ensure the exercises are instructed and performed correctly.

NuroMovers class is run by a Physiotherapist with a special interest in neurological conditions and is targeted for patients with a neurological movement disorder. The class includes:

  • Specialised neurological physiotherapy assessment and ongoing treatment (outcome measures, with aim to work towards individual functional goals)
  • Evidence-based aerobic and functional exercise prescription
  • Evidence-based outcome measures, with aim to work towards individual functional goals
  • Ongoing information, knowledge and support for management of their condition
  • Progressive evidence-based home exercises
  • Encourage self-management and empowers patients in condition management
  • A  safe and supervised environment to participate in exercise and challenge themselves

Patients appropriate for this class:

  • Diagnosed neurological movement disorder (specifically targeting Parkinsons disease, mild to moderate Stroke and MS)
  • Require stable cardiovascular health and have clearance to participate in aerobic exercise
  • Safely ambulant with or without a walking aid independently or with minimal supervision
  • Cognitively be able to take instruction and participate in a class exercise program independently

In order to access allied health at Sports & Spinal under the NDIS, follow the next three steps:

1. Follow the NDIS checklist for eligibility. Click > here
2. Contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 and an NDIS representative will assist you with your questions.
3. Once your application is approved you will then work with a Local Area Coordinator or Planner to lay out your needs and goals. They will also assist you in allocating your funding to the necessary services.

If you are already approved by NDIS, contact your local Sports & Spinal and book an initial appointment. Upon the initial contact please notify us that you are NDIS approved and your NDIS registration number and how your fund is being managed. Please make sure you notify us that you are NDIS approved, provide us with your name, your NDIS registration number and how your fund is being managed.

You and your allied health provider will then be able to work out a service agreement/plan at your first appointment

Jai Laroiya

Neurological Physiotherapy

Jai graduated from Griffith University in 2015 with a Master of Physiotherapy, after gaining his Bachelor of Exercise Science in 2013.

Prior to joining the Sports and Spinal team, Jai has worked at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital since 2016 and has acquired a strong interest in neurological Physiotherapy. Jai has continued to strengthen his skills by completing a range of neurological specialised courses and workshops.

Jai has been a local to the Sunshine Coast since 2016, enjoying the beach, surf and exploring all that Sunshine Coast has to offer.

Jai’s professional desire is to optimize the quality of life for each of his patients, always ensuring he creates and tailors programs that address the patient’s goals, current functional ability and lifestyle to cater to their specific needs.

James McKenzie

Occupational Therapist

James graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours).  He has a passion for assisting clients to overcome barriers set by injury, disease or disability through goal setting, equipment prescription and task-oriented rehabilitation.  James has a specific interest in neurological conditions, particularly in stroke and upper limb rehabilitation post-stroke.  He has a keen interest in providing innovative interventions that can improve physical and cognitive functioning for people of all demographics.  James’ goal is to provide effective rehab strategies and environmental modifications that enable his clients to achieve more productive, enriching participation in activities at home and within their communities.  In his spare time, he loves to travel, cook for friends, and adventure in and around the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland region.

Margie Thackwray

Neurological Physiotherapy

Margie graduated from the University of South Australia in 2013 and moved to Queensland. Margie began working for Queensland Health at the Nambour Hospital, Maleny Hospital and then the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Margie has most recently been working in the Community visiting clients from Gympie to Caloundra.

Margie  has a passion for assisting people with neurological disorders such as Motor Neuron Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons and Stroke rehabilitation. Margie enjoys working closely with people to identify and achieve their goals. Margie is here to support clients and their families along their journey whatever that might entail.

Sara-Jane Cheong

Physiotherapist

Sara has recently graduated from physiotherapy at ACU in Brisbane. Sara has done a previous degree in nursing and has had 8 years experience working with acute orthopaedic, medical and surgical patients. Although Sara has found her true passion in physiotherapy and has a keen interest in rehabilitation. Sara is excited to work with people to help them achieve their full potential.

Heather Hondow

Neurological & Vestibular Physiotherapy
Heather graduated from La Trobe University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Physiotherapy Practice.
Heather is passionate about enhancing the functional outcomes and quality of life of people experiencing neurological and vestibular conditions by guiding the highest quality, evidence-based, goal-oriented, and patient-focused care possible.
To achieve this, Heather has participated in and contributed to, a wide variety of professional development activities. In particular, she has successfully completed advanced competency training in vestibular physiotherapy, and concussion assessment and management. Heather has additionally undertaken professional development and is extensively experienced in the use of motor relearning and normal movement approaches to neurological rehabilitation. She is currently undertaking the neurological titling process of completing a Masters of Rehabilitation (Neurological Physiotherapy) via the Australian Catholic University.
Heather has recently relocated to the gorgeous Sunshine Coast from regional Victoria. She is looking forward to enjoying beautiful sunrises from the Glasshouse mountain peaks, training for upcoming marathon events on the local trails, followed by relaxing at the beach

Stacy graduated with an Honours in Occupational Therapy at the University of Sunshine Coast in 2018 and since then, has been working within the aged care sector.

She has developed a passion for working collaboratively with clients in an evidenced-based, holistic and client-centred way.  This approach enables her to better support clients to overcome challenges in their most important and meaningful activities, empowering them to live a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

In her spare time, Stacy enjoys living an active and balanced lifestyle with outdoor activities such as hiking and stand-up paddle boarding and indoor activities such as reading, cooking, journaling, and Qigong.

Casey Morrison

Occupational Therapist

Casey graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy (Honours). She is passionate about community care and enabling people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, whilst maintaining safety and independence. A strong focus on safe mobility, reducing falls risks and home modifications enable Casey to help her clients reach this goal. Casey has a keen interest in pressure injury prevention, fatigue management, dementia, brain injury, and cognition rehabilitation. Casey studied Occupational Therapy as a mature aged student after running a successful business as a Personal Training and Massage Therapist. She prides herself on her holistic approach to healthcare which focuses on psychosocial wellness and collaboration with all care providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for her clients.

Chelsea McCallum

Dietitian

Chelsea studied a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Since graduating, Chelsea has gained experience in recipe development, aged care, corporate wellness, disability and one-on-one consults. She has further developed her knowledge in irritable bowel syndrome, the gut microbiome, and gut health attending several workshops and courses within Australia and internationally in the UK. Chelsea also welcomes clients wanting to achieve weight loss, those with dyslipidemia and other chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

All patients are welcomed including GP referred, NDIS, DVA, Work Cover and privately paying. Chelsea is available for Dietitian appointments online as well as at our Chermside, Woolloongabba, Springfield and North Lakes locations.

Tarni Sanewski

Dietitian

Tarni is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who is passionate about improving health, promoting recovery and preventing disease by inspiring healthy diet and lifestyle choices using a patient-centred approach. Graduating from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics, Tarni has since had clinical experience working with acute cardiac and respiratory patients in hospital. Special interest areas include rehabilitation, weight management, cardiovascular disease, gut health and sports nutrition.

Outside of work, Tarni enjoys hiking, climbing mountains, exploring new places, drawing and photography. She is always experimenting with new foods, recipes and keeping up to date with the latest research in nutrition and dietetics.

Emily Whitmore

Remedial Massage Therapist

Emily Whitmore graduated from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom in June 2012 achieving a first class honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science. She then went on to complete her Level 5 BTEC Professional Diploma in Clinical Sport and Remedial Massage Therapy at the London School of Sports Massage, qualifying in August 2013. She is also a qualified therapist in advanced Dry Needling.

Since qualifying Emily has worked as a Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist within Physiotherapy clinics in the United Kingdom. Her clinical experience also includes working with British Triathlon at their base in Loughborough; this has involved travelling overseas to training camps and European and World Triathlon events, helping to prevent injury and facilitate recovery from training and competition. Emily also worked as the primary masseuse for the Loughborough Students Elite Rugby Union Team who compete in National League 1.

Faith is an Exercise Physiologist from Tasmania, graduating from the University of the Sunshine Coast, who now considers the Sunshine Coast home.

She has a passion for Women’s Health and movement analysis, looking at how to you’re moving daily that has an impact on your musculoskeletal aches and pains.

Laura Perry

Low Back & Pelvic Pain

Laura graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia, and since then has been working in rehabilitation centres, as well as private practice. Laura has developed a passion for low back and spinal rehabilitation and working closely with GPs and specialists. Laura believes in a holistic approach to injury and management by addressing issues at a functional and impairment level to help her patients achieve their goals and to get them back to optimal functioning and performance.

Laura has postgraduate training in the lower back and pelvic injuries, as well as clinical Pilates and spinal rehabilitation, and regularly attends further training to ensure that her clinical skills and knowledge are kept up-to-date. Laura enjoys the outdoors, surfing and spending time with family and friends.
