Orthotics Reduce High Pressure Areas Underfoot

Orthotics reduce load on high pressure areas under the foot. If enough pressure is removed the skin will not be forced to alter and become harder.

In diabetic patients Orthotics help prevent and heal ulcers.

Please click on your relevant condition your Podiatrist has identified to find out how Orthotics will help as part of an overall treatment plan.

Common conditions:

  • Hard Corns underfoot
  • Callous underfoot
  • Fat pad atrophy

Hard skin in the form of corns and callous can develop underfoot as a protective mechanism against high pressure areas. The skin hardens to prevent the bone from breaking through the skin. Corns and callous can become painful and even debilitating if left un-treated.

The cause of the high-pressure areas under the foot can be from bony prominences, naturally thin fat padding, wearing of fat pad over time, genetics, history of non-cushioned footwear and/or history of long hours spent on hard flooring.

The role of an Orthotic in this case is to reduce and deflect pressure safely away from the corns or callous. By doing this it can give relief and slow down the re-formation. The hard skin typically becomes more manageable even though in most cases it does not prevent the hard skin from re-forming eventually.

Common conditions:

  • Neuropathic ulcers
  • High risk of ulceration areas – corns, callous and fat pad atrophy

A risk for diabetic patients with progressed neuropathy is that they may not be able to feel the warning signals from painful hard corns, callous, rubbing from exposed parts of shoes and/or sharp objects that may have unknowingly penetrated the skin.

Neuropathy is the diminishing of normal nerve sensations (e.g. pain, pressure, sharp and blunt) which can progress with diabetes if the appropriate lifestyle, health and medical measures are not continually addressed – in co-ordination with the diabetic patient’s General Practitioner.

A potential complication for those with diminished sensation is a neuropathic ulcer. This is a wound that cannot be felt and can commonly go undetected for a long period of time. The longer the wound goes undetected the greater the risk of infection. If the infection is not treated in a timely manner this can progress to a bone infection and eventual amputation in the worst-case scenario.

The role of Orthotics in diabetic patients is to reduce the risk of ulceration by decreasing the load on identified high pressure areas underfoot.

If there has already been ulceration Orthotics play a role in helping heal the site and further prevent it from re-occurring.

Did you know that a large number of private health funds 'reset' their benefits at the end of each year? 🤷‍♀️

Unclaimed health fund benefits don't roll over into the next year financial year which means your premiums will go to waste if you don't take advantage of them.

We can process claims on the spot through HICAPS for
🤸 Physiotherapy
🤸 Podiatry
🤸 Remedial Massage
🤸 Exercise Physiology
🤸 Clinical Pilates
🤸 Dietetics and MORE!

You don't need a referral to see our team, and you don't even need an injury - we see people for maintenance and preventative treatments as well.

Get in touch with your local Sports & Spinal and book before your health fund benefits run out!
