Our Podiatrists at Sports & Spinal are experienced in treating musculoskeletal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Through working alongside other allied health professionals, we are trained in looking at the whole picture and using the appropriate treatment modalities to help get you back to full function and beyond.

What is Radial Shockwave Therapy?

Radial shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, safe and effective treatment in which a device is used to pass acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the affected area. It is aimed at improving pain, function, and quality of life in conjunction with other treatments.

Common conditions we treat with Shockwave?

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel Pain
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shin Splints/Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • And more…

How does it work?

It is trying to take affected soft tissue from a more chronic state to an acute state. In doing so it provides a stimulus to a ‘stalled’ repair sequence. The full details on how it provides this stimulus are yet to be identified but some of the effects are related to:

  • Mechanical stimulation
  • Increased local blood flow
  • Increase in cellular activity
  • Transient analgesic effect on afferent nerves
  • Break down calcific deposits (primarily, but not exclusively in tendon)

When will you see results?

This varies between individuals, but it is not uncommon to start feeling a reduction in pain levels after your first session. The benefit of a reduction in pain can continue into the months following your last session. The actual tissue repair effects also continue in the months following. This combined with addressing ALL of the contributing factors will ensure maximum positive outcomes.

How many sessions are required?

Most clinical research has used between 3 to 5 sessions but up to 8 sessions may be needed in more stubborn cases. The treating Podiatrist will ascertain what is best for your presentation. The time between sessions is 4 to 7 days – Ideally no longer than 2 weeks.

Session costs

Please call either the North Lakes clinic (Brisbane) on 07 3152 7212 or the Sippy Downs clinic (Sunshine Coast) on 07 5322 5644 or the Robina clinic (Gold Coast) on 07 5689 4138 for more information about session costs. You may require an initial appointment with one of our Podiatrists first to ascertain if shockwave is suitable for you.

Is it claimable on Private Health?

These are the codes that we can use to help you get maximum rebate if you have private health for Podiatry. Individual cover varies so please check with your private health company to confirm that you are covered.

Codes 014 or 012 – Standard consultation

Code 145 – Electrophysical Therapy

Why EMS Dolorclast Shockwave Therapy?

Bench studies demonstrate that the Dolorclast® Radial Shock Waves deliver up to 200% more energy density than competing devices at frequencies of 15 Hz and above and maximum pressure.

This means 3 times more energy for better treatment outcomes!

Is Shockwave Therapy all I need to do?

It is a very useful adjunct to treatment but it should not be used as a sole treatment. Working with your Podiatrist or Physiotherapist to address ALL the contributing factors is VITAL for overall success with your rehabilitation.

At Sports & Spinal, our purpose is to inspire, engage and empower everyone on their journey of health and wellbeing - including advocating for fair and equitable access to healthcare.

Exercise physiology is a recognised and essential part of Australia’s health system, supported through Medicare, DVA, the NDIS and private health funds. Yet it is still subject to GST. This means people managing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and mental health challenges are paying extra for care that helps them live better, healthier lives.

We don’t think that’s right, which is why we’re supporting Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) in their campaign to remove GST from exercise physiology services.

Our team are calling on our community to support @essa_au's petition to reach 50,000 signatures.

Sign via the link in our bio and share this message to help spread the word. Together, we can help #axethetax on health services and improve access for all Australians!
