Pregnacy Massage

Supporting You Through Your Pregancy

BOOK NOW

Pregnancy massage at Sports & Spinal is a combination of relaxation massage and deep tissue. Our massage therapists adapt their techniques to address changes a woman goes through during her pregnancy.

Pregnancy massage helps you by targeting specific areas of the body that needs to be relaxed or allow more movement. As your body changes during this time, it is important to prepare the body and aid the changes instead of trying to fight them. Pregnancy is a joyful time in everyone’s lives but it is also the most taxing on the body so it makes sense to keep your body moving and in optimal health during this time. Pregnancy or prenatal massage is a type of massage therapy designed to decrease stress/anxiety, reduce swelling in the legs and arms, improve circulation and reduce musculoskeletal aches and pains.

During pregnancy, many women experience low back, pelvic and buttock pain due to hormonal changes and the additional load placed on their body due to their growing baby.

Women who undergo massage therapy during pregnancy consistently report decreased anxiety, stress, leg pain, lower back pain and improved sleep. Pregnancy massage has even proved to be effective during labour in managing pain and improving the emotional experience of labour.

The benefits include:

  • Preparation of muscles required in childbirth.
  • Neck and back pain relief is caused by muscle imbalance and imperfect posture.
  • Assist in maintaining proper posture.
  • Emotional support through nurturing touch.
  • Relaxation and decreased insomnia.
  • Lower levels of cramping particularly in the calf muscles.
  • Reduced sciatic pain

A vaginal pessary is a silicon device that is used to support the walls of the vagina when there is pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This can be the prolapse of the bladder, bowel or uterus 🤸‍♀️

There are many different types of pessaries catering for different prolapses or incontinence. Our Women's Health Physio team can decide which pessary to use that is most suitable for your condition and support your individual needs.

What does the research show? 🔎

✔️Combining pelvic floor muscle training and pessary fittings led to twice as many women perceiving improvements in prolapse symptoms and POP-specific quality of life.

✔️When a pessary is fitted, significantly greater improvements are made in reducing prolapse symptoms like discomfort, urinary issues, and defecatory issues.

✔️The use of pessaries when managing POP can delay or even avoid the need for surgical intervention. Plus, pessary fittings can be used to help manage urinary incontinence, pelvic pain syndromes and aid in constipation management.

Fitting vaginal pessaries is an extended scope skill within Pelvic Health Physiotherapy and across all Sports & Spinal clinics, we have a detailed process for pessary fittings to ensure proper care is taken before, during and after a pessary is fitted, and routine follow ups are dutifully scheduled.

We work collaboratively with our women`s health patients and their primary medical clinician to optimise this process.

June is Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month! 🌸

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when the pelvic organs drop from their normal position due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. Symptoms can include a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, and urinary issues.

Physiotherapy can be a game-changer in managing POP. Here are three effective exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor, core and surrounding areas:

1️⃣ Bridge
2️⃣ Bird Dog
3️⃣ Single Leg Toe Tap

These exercises can help improve your pelvic health and reduce symptoms. Contact a women’s health physiotherapist for personalised management and support. 💪
