We like to allow 60mins for your initial appointment (in most cases, this may vary in some circumstances) to ensure that there is enough time to take a detailed and thorough history and to allow plenty of time for discussion, education, treatment, and questions.

Your initial appointment will involve some form of assessment, but this will depend on the condition you are seeking treatment for. Where appropriate this may consist of an internal vaginal exam, but this will be discussed in more detail at your appointment where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the reasons behind the assessment. Other assessment methods include real time ultrasound, biofeedback and musculoskeletal screening.

After your assessment, your Physiotherapist will be able to discuss with you the diagnosis, and the options for treatment. This may involve a variety of things including (but certainly not limited to) pelvic floor muscle training, bladder and bowel management and strength and exercise programs. You will always leave our rooms with a good understanding of your diagnosis and with a comprehensive plan in place to improve your symptoms.

What Do I Wear?
Whatever you feel comfortable in!

Do I need to bring anything?
Any relevant scans, letters or reports, as well as current medication lists. Sometimes we will also require a full bladder if we are planning on using the ultrasound machine for assessment, but the reception staff will let you know prior to your appointment

No other stage of life stresses the pelvic floor more than pregnancy and childbirth. Even caesarian births affect the pelvic floor as it still stretches and bears the weight of the pregnant uterus for nine months. Maintaining pelvic floor strength and function throughout your pregnancy and postnatally is essential.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic Girdle Pain is very common during pregnancy due to the major changes that occur within your body both physically and hormonally. A combination of hands-on treatment, strength and conditioning and mobility work is used to treat these aches and pains throughout pregnancy.

Pregnancy Exercise Classes

Exercise in pregnancy has been shown to reduce complications such as gestational diabetes and pre eclampsia and is a great way to reduce and treat pelvic girdle pain. The classes are run from our Sippy Downs practice and offer a supportive environment to keep you strong and active right up until delivery.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a blessing and is a thrilling, special time in your life that should be cherished. However, it can also be a physical and emotional rollercoaster, which is why it is so important for mums-to-be to take some time out to relax, be pampered and ease the aches, pains, and tension that come with pregnancy.

At Sports & Spinal we have a special pregnancy massage cushion, enabling Mums-to-be to be massaged while laying on their stomach. Our massage therapists use a specialised massage oil blend to massage your entire body focusing on the areas that most need work.

All initial massages are charged at 50% off – contact your local clinic to book in otday!

Postnatal Follow-Up

A Pelvic Floor check is an essential part of your post-natal recovery and is highly recommended prior to returning to exercise to prevent any long term complications. Our Physiotherapists work closely with our Exercise Physiologist to ensure new mums are building their pelvic floor strength as well as their general strength and fitness to support their lifestyles and health and fitness goals. We also offer specific post natal ‘Active Mums’ strengthening classes which achieve all of the above in a supportive class environment, where little ones are welcome!

The term ‘pelvic floor’ refers to the group of muscles that sit at the base of the pelvis. Their job is to provide support to the pelvic organs; bladder, vagina, uterus and rectum, as well as maintain continence.

The pelvic floor muscles can become weakened during pregnancy and childbirth, but they are can also be affected by constipation, a chronic cough and repetitive heavy lifting. Menopause can also influence how these muscles work.

Incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine. There are several different types of incontinence.

Stress Urinary Incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine with exercise, coughing, sneezing or movement such as rolling bed or standing from a chair.

Urge Urinary Incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine with the urge to go to the toilet. People often describe this as ‘not quite making it in time!’

Fecal Incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of stool; liquid or formed.

The term prolapse refers to any movement of the pelvic organs from their original position. Prolapse is commonly seen in women following childbirth but can happen at any stage during a woman’s life. Common symptoms include feelings of bulging or heaviness in the vagina or anus, difficulty emptying the bladder and/or bowel and difficulty keeping a tampon in.

Exercise Right Week 24-30 May

Man running in the hills. Blog header titled 'Exercise Right Week.'

From May 24 to 30 it is Exercise Right Week! Exercise Right Week aims at raising awareness of the benefits that exercise has for both your health and wellbeing. The campaign also looks to help Australian's better understand how to get the 'right' advice for their individual health needs.

So, with exercise being the theme of this week it seems fitting to talk all things Exercise Physiologists (EP's) and how they can help you.

EP's , Who and What are They?

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are experts in delivering exercise and lifestyle modification programs that help to improve people’s health. For these guys, exercise is medicine!

EPs are university qualified allied health professionals. They are equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions.

Such exercise interventions are developed for people with acute, subacute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Exercise Physiologists are commonly confused with personal trainers but there are key differences between them!

👉 EPs are university qualified.

👉 They are subject to strict accreditation requirements.

👉 EPs know how to set goals and maintain motivation.

👉 They can treat and work with all types of people.

Who Do EP's Treat?

EPs treat conditions such as:

  • Cardiovascular & Metabolic
  • Neurological & Musculoskeletal
  • Oncology & Kidney
  • Respiratory & Pulmonary
  • Chronic pain & Women’s & men’s health
  • Bone health & balance mental health
  • Disabilities, and many more

EPs tend to use a more A “hands off” approach with more of a focus of long term rehabilitation/later stage of rehab. Prescribe safe, tailored, effective & clinically justified exercise interventions.

Sports and Spinal EP's are your go-to service providers when it comes to the prescription of exercise. If you want to take charge of your health and exercise routine call your nearest Sports and Spinal clinic to see how we can help. Or head on over to our website to learn more.

Physiotherapists VS. Exercise Physiologists

Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists (EP) can often be categorized as the same discipline or compared to as "one being better than the other."

But, though the two share similar qualities they are both two very different disciplines. Sports and Spinal Exercise Physiologist, Georgia White has helped to clear up the confusion and has outlined some of the key differences between physio's and EP's.

What Are We?

Firstly, let's define what a Physio and an EP are. Physio's are university qualified allied health professionals that assess, diagnose, plan and manage the care of patients across a broad range of areas and conditions.

Whereas, EPs are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, subacute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

Who Do We Treat?

Both Physio's and EPs treat a wide variety of patients with differing conditions and treatment needs.

Physio's treat conditions including:

  • Cardio-respiratory & Neurological
  • Musculoskeletal & Oncology
  • Pulmonary & Chronic pain
  • Women's & men's health
  • Disabilities & Sporting injuries

EPs treat conditions such as:

  • Cardiovascular & Metabolic
  • Neurological & Musculoskeletal
  • Oncology & Kidney
  • Respiratory & Pulmonary
  • Chronic pain & Women's & men's health
  • Bone health & balance mental health
  • Disabilities, and many more

What Stage of Rehab Do We Treat?

Physiotherapists treat using a combination of hands on and prescribed exercises for the more "acute" stage of rehab. Physio's also provide treatment for all stages of rehab, acute and long term, depending on the individual patient.

EPs tend to use a more A "hands off" approach with more of a focus of long term rehabilitation/later stage of rehab. Prescribe safe, tailored, effective & clinically justified exercise interventions.

Sometimes the scope of EPs and Physiotherapists do overlap! The main difference is physios are able to DIAGNOSE, ASSESS & TREAT.

Whereas EPs DESIGN, DELIVER & EVALUATE safe and effective exercise interventions.

Here at Sports & Spinal, EPs and Physiotherapists work together to provide the best care for our patients - this what we call multi-disciplinary care. To learn more on how an exercise physiologists, physiotherapist, or both could help you and your health goals use this link.

She also enjoys watching them progress with treatment, achieving goals and unlocking certain aspects of their rehabilitation they never thought they could. What's Your Why? Advice From Our Expert Exercise Physiologist

What's your why? It seems like a simple question but when it comes to our exercise routines and diets it can be harder to answer than first thought. Our resident Exercise Physiologist, Sophie Lewis explains the importance of exercise and diet and how an exercise plan is one of the best ways to stay on track and achieve your goals!

The Importance of Exercise and Diet

Every year, over 2.3 million Australians aged 15 years and over “go on a diet” to help lose weight - most of these Australians are women. Unfortunately, women are also more likely than men to have higher rates of body dissatisfaction, poor body image, disordered eating, and weight-related depression and anxiety.

We have become a society obsessed with losing weight through extreme measures such as fad diets, and "magic pills". These measures can be why most weight loss efforts fail long-term. Regular physical activity is important for the prevention of chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes; and assists with the management of anxiety and depression.

It's All About Mindset

Your mindset towards exercise or physical activity is a great determinant of your success (or failure) with weight loss. If you see exercise as a chore, then it's likely you’ll make excuses to get out of it. Rather than feeling confined to traditional forms of exercise, get creative! Dancing, gardening, horse riding, or stand-up paddle-boarding all require physical exertion and can be a lot of fun.

Another way to improve your opinion towards exercise can be focusing on the short and long-term benefits; increased moods, confidence, energy, strength, as well as lowering your risk for chronic diseases, improving sleep quality, and setting a good example for your friends and family.

If you’re still finding it difficult to start a new exercise plan, here are Sophie's top 10 tips for some extra help!

1. Ask yourself why.
Why is losing weight important to you? Is it to have more energy to play with your kids, look amazing at a special event, or climb stairs without getting puffed? Finding you're why will enable you to stick to your plan when the going gets tough.

2. Set small incremental goals.

It's easy to get overwhelmed, so break down your goal into small achievements – remember the recommended weight loss is 0.5-1kg per week.

3. Track your progress.

It's not all about the scales - take body measurements, photos, and perform a fitness test.

4. Keep a diary
Many studies have shown that increased awareness from tracking food and exercise throughout the day resulted in greater and more sustainable weight loss

5. Recruit friends and family

Exercise can be tough, but when you do it with other people it has been shown to increase adherence. Our group classes are a great example of this.

6. Use incentives

Rewarding yourself for milestones can help with a long-term commitment. Book a massage, buy new exercise gear, or treat yourself to a weekend away.

7. Progress, not perfection
Focus on the small wins and positive changes you’ve made so far; did you cut out your soft drink habit? Did you take the stairs rather than the lift?

8. Plan for failure
Life happens, but you can be prepared. Put out your gym clothes the night before, pre-pack healthy lunches, and schedule in exercise time so you can prioritize it.

9. Action, action, action!

Any type of physical activity will help get you to your goal. Make sure you get up every 1-2 hours and walk around for 5 minutes, take the stairs, park further away, or set a goal of doing 100 squats off your chair.

10. Seek out the professionals for help
Speak to an Accredited Exercise Physiologist on how to kick start your exercise goals. Not only can they provide motivation but they are the experts of exercise and can tailor a plan specific to your body.

It's important to understand that everyone's exercise and diet needs are different and they generally change as our lifestyles change. If you need more help and guidance in this area, contact our amazing exercise physiologist to see how they can help you.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a relatively common condition that affects approximately 20% of Australian. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) refers to a collection of symptoms including diarrhoea and/or constipation as well as accompanying symptoms such as bloating and abdominal pain. The cause of IBS is not known, but several factors appear to worsen symptoms. These can include some of the foods we eat, stress or an infection.

Our dietitians believe that many different food & lifestyle factors can trigger gut symptoms, our job is to work with you to help identify which strategies are right for you. Diet plays a significant role in managing IBS as we can modify the diet to identify any “trigger” foods which may make IBS symptoms worse. Our Dietitian will help you start eliminating foods, and you may be expected to follow the low FODMAP Dietitian as well as following lactose-free, wheat-free, gluten-free or dairy-free diets. The low FODMAP diet is used in the short term to establish which foods, if any, are triggers for your IBS symptoms. A strict elimination period of around 2-6 weeks is indicated for most IBS sufferers, at which point foods will be reintroduced to determine your triggers.

Our dietitians have a particular interest in the FODMAP diet and would love to help you to minimise your IBS symptoms to limit the impact they are having on your life! We also ensure that you are eating a healthy variety of foods and not missing out on any essential nutrients.

Losing weight is a confusing task in today’s world! There is so much information available on different food products, what we should & shouldn’t eat and what new diet is taking over as the latest craze. It is important not to put your body in harm’s way and to ensure you are only taking on advice which is evidence-based and accurate. Achieving a healthy weight is important to reduce your risk of many co-morbidities such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease etc. It is also important to make sure you do so in a healthy way by making small, sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle. Our dietitians can help you to set achievable goals and work with you to determine strategies which are going to work for you!

Our Dietitians can help by:

  • Ideas for meal and snack ideas
  • Meal planning and food preparation tips
  • How to identify nutritional labels on foods

  • Learning to better listen to your hunger and fullness cues

  • Normalising your eating so you can still enjoy foods you love!
