Accredited Exercise Physiologists are allied health professionals providing exercise and lifestyle therapies to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury, and disability.

An Exercise Physiologist (EP) is a 4-year, University-trained Allied Health professional who is an exercise prescription expert. They will work with you to design a specific exercise program tailored to your injuries, health status and goals. This service is particularly valuable for return-to-work conditioning, post-surgical strength rebuilding, chronic condition support, and deconditioning where confidence and consistency are key.

Our Exercise Physiologists at Sports & Spinal can help your condition by working with you to formulate an appropriate treatment plan to assist in reaching your specific goals. Exercise Physiologists use movement and exercise with specific education and motivational guidance to treat and manage your conditions.

Progression is guided by objective markers such as strength tolerance, walking capacity, balance, endurance and functional task performance.

Sports & Spinal accredited Exercise Physiologists can assist with Diabetes & Obesity, General Health & well-being, Mental Health Issues, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Neurological Conditions, Strength & Conditioning, Women’s Health, Aging, Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Paediatrics and Cancer.

Exercise facilitates changes within the body that increases its efficiency. This allows us to manage conditions or diseases that can cause our bodies to not function to the best ability.

You can expect our Exercise Physiologist to listen to your personal story and ask questions, so they can work with you to guide an appropriate treatment plan. Our Exercise Physiologist will complete a detailed, goal-focused, clinical, and functional assessment.

Treatment will vary and be specific to you but will likely involve modified movement and exercises to build your capacity and function through strength, fitness, balance, and more. Treatment will change and progress while working alongside your Exercise Physiologist. Our Exercise physiologists will provide education on health, conditions, injuries and what to do and what not to do in different environments, including our onsite gym, your regular gym and pools, depending on your interests and goals. Our Exercise Physiologist believes in a multi-disciplinary approach and will work with other health professionals to help manage your condition.

Programs are designed to translate into real-world outcomes — safer movement at work, improved tolerance to daily demands, and sustainable long-term health habits.

Noah Collins

Exercise Physiologist: Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

Noah graduated with his Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2023 whilst studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He is a born and bred Gympie local who isn’t too fond of the city life.

Noah enjoys seeing clients meet their goals and wants to help them improve their quality of life. He has a passion for sports and physical activity and wants to help his clients return to their sports, hobbies and workplaces.

Noah loves to play sport and do physical activity and can be seen playing at the hockey fields or riding his mountain bike at the Victory Trails. He also enjoys going for some runs and playing backyard cricket from time to time.

Noah is available for exercise physiology appointments at our Gympie clinic.

Benjamin Frank

Exercise Physiologist: Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation & Cardiometabolic Health

Ben is passionate about all things gym-related and has a background in personal training. He completed 2 bachelor degrees in Melbourne (Bachelor of Science: majoring in Human Physiology with a minor in Psychology; and a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science) as well as a master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology before moving to Gympie at the end of 2023. His areas of interest include:

  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation (with specialisation in the shoulder)
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Defence veteran rehabilitation
  • Mental health
  • Metabolic health, muscle development and weight loss

Ben has gained diverse experience ranging from strength and conditioning for junior high-level athletes to clinical populations including orthopaedic, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular, neurological, and mental health conditions. During his current role, he has refined his musculoskeletal knowledge and upskilled through completing shoulder rehabilitation courses.

His approach to rehabilitation and resilience has been shaped by his own journey. In 2022, he nearly lost his arm in a cycling accident, which combined with years of chronic low back pain, has taught him not only the importance of evidence-based rehabilitation on a personal level, but also empathy, patience, and the mental strength needed to overcome adversity.

He believes mindset is everything. His focus is on building genuine relationships with clients and empowering them to achieve sustainable, life-changing results—physically and mentally.

Ben is available for exercise physiology consults at our Gympie clinic.

I never knew this place was here until work injury led me there. The lovely girls at reception made me feel so welcome. Michael is great, his treatment has given me a better range of movement, he is always easygoing and very easy to talk to.

Can’t thank the team at Sports & Spinal Gympie enough for there support… from the ladys on the front desk who are always extremely bright and bubbly and help pass the waiting time happily having a yarn when time permits, to my physiotherapist who will remain nameless but you know who you are.. who I can talk to about anything in particular, all of you have gone above and beyond to help me, and continue to do so with my rehabilitation and my return to work.. without there support and guidance I think it would have been a much longer recovery time.. a massive THANK YOU TO YOU ALL🙏

I’ve been working with Ben for a shoulder injury and all I can say is that he is amazing at what he does. Very knowledgeable, professional, always on time and nothing it’s too much trouble. Always happy to answer questions and go the extra mile if needed.
My shoulder is back feeling better than ever and I’m back in the gym lifting weights.
I can’t thank Ben enough, highly recommended.

Absolutely brilliant. My husband Allan has seen a number of physiotherapists over the years and we have to say that Michael Cahanding is by far the best. He is amazing! Allan has made fantastic progress.

Michael is by far the best physio we have seen regarding my husband’s work injury. Michael is friendly, compassionate and goes above and beyond to help his patients. The staff are friendly and very accommodating, we couldn’t be more happy with their professionalism and highly recommend seeing them over anyone else in town.

I have been working on my recovery with Ben for over 12 months now. Lost around 20 kilos of post surgery weight and drastically improved my overall fitness under Ben’s supervision.
As an Ex Serviceman my health and fitness is extremey important to me.
I have found Ben to have a unique understanding of trauma and its ongoing effects both mentally and physically and as such his excerise classes for Veteran Health Care have been invaluable in my own recovery and those of my class mates.
Ben’s understanding of the complex nature of multiple injuries and their ongoing impact on lifestyle and functionality has been integral in my recovery. This has built a platform for me to regain fitness, and a more complex understanding of my physical limitations and how to work around them to achieve my health goals.

Grip strength: it’s not just about winning bragging rights in the clinic (although, that’s definitely a bonus!) 💪

Strong grip strength is also a key indicator of overall health. Research shows people with stronger grips often experience better health outcomes, faster rehab, and even improved cognitive function as they age. It’s a simple way to track progress, guide strength training, and monitor rehabilitation.

Big thanks to the legends at @coolum_sportsandspinal for this clip, the team has some serious grip strength!
