Our headache & neck pain physios are available throughout the Sports and Spinal clinics which cover a wide region from Gold Coast to the Fraser Coast.

Our physios have all undergone postgraduate studies in the treatment and diagnosis of headache and neck pain conditions. Many of our physios have also had training in the Watson Headache® Approach which includes a detailed evaluation, a scientifically based treatment method and finally sustainable headache relief and resolution.

What is a headache?

Headaches are one of the most common afflictions, with more than 90% of Australian adults experiencing headaches at some point in their life. There are many different presentations of headaches, including debilitating migraines with nausea and vomiting, tension headaches, cluster headaches and stress-related headaches. Three common types are a tension-type headache, migraine, and headaches secondary to a disorder in one of the top three or four joints in the neck. These neck-related headaches are commonly called ‘cervicogenic’ headache. Cervicogenic headache is of mild-to-moderate intensity and is always accompanied by neck pain. Most typically, the pain begins in the neck and then spreads to a headache.

What causes headaches?

Each Headache is unique. What works to resolve one person’s headache may not work on another, even though the symptoms are identical. There are many factors that cause a headache or migraine, ranging from stress, trauma, jaw dysfunction, hormonal changes, degenerative changes, muscle tightness, significant life-changing events or pathology.

How can the Physios @ Sports & Spinal me with headaches?

Our skilled clinicians will identify exactly what is causing your headache. The pain you actually feel in your face, eyes, jaw or temple (to name a few spots) is the site of the pain, and more often than not, the source of the pain lies elsewhere. Based on information gained from our detailed examination, our physiotherapists will illustrate clearly to you what individual structures are causing your headache by actively changing the quality of your pain there and then during the treatment.

Vertigo Information

Vertigo is the sensation that either you or the world is rotating. Episodes can last for a few minutes or be constant. Attacks may be associated with specific movements like rolling over in bed, turning to look over your shoulder, looking up or down a flight of stairs, or may take you completely by surprise. You may experience vertigo from the extreme sport of standing upright without moving at all! Vertigo can have a big impact on your function. You may not be able to do things you used to enjoy. It can be overwhelming to concentrate or complete basic tasks when your world is spinning or you feel like you are standing on shifting sand.

What are the symptoms of Vertigo?

Other symptoms can include lightheadedness, feeling faint, headaches, nausea, difficulty concentrating or blurred vision. Sometimes you can feel like you veer off to one side when you walk or struggle to keep your balance.

What are the causes of Vertigo?

There are many causes of vertigo, but problems arise when the three main balance systems in your body are not telling your brain the same information. These 3 systems are the balance organs in the inner ear (called the vestibular system), the position sensors in your joints and muscles, especially the neck and feet, and your eyes. Dysfunction can occur in one or any combination of these three systems, or in the processing of this information in the brain. These systems can also deteriorate as part of the normal ageing process which adds another challenge.

What is the Vestibular System?

The vestibular system is made up of 3 semi-circular canals in each ear that are filled with fluid. Tiny hairs inside these canals sense when this fluid shifts as you move your head and tell your brain whether you are upright or tipped at an angle. The most common dysfunction is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). In this disorder, microscopic crystals in the canals of the vestibular system are dislodged through trauma, illness or the normal aging process. Movement of these crystals in the vestibular system can trick the brain into thinking your head is tilted when your vision is telling you your head is straight resulting in an overwhelmed, spinning sensation. More complex dysfunction includes complete loss of function in one or both of the inner ears. Fortunately, the brain can be trained to compensate for the complete loss of function in this vestibular system by strengthening the use of vision and/or good postural awareness of the head and neck alignment. Other factors include vestibular migraines and the high association between headaches, migraines, and vertigo.

How can the Physio’s @ Sports & Spinal help me with Vertigo?

Our physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat dysfunction of the vestibular system and your balance. You don’t need a referral and our clinicians also screen for more serious causes of vertigo such as Meniere’s disease, or vestibular neuritis. We will refer you to a GP if you need to undertake further testing such as CT scans or blood tests. We also assess your posture and any neck or migraine issues you may experience.

Treatment involves Vestibular rehabilitation therapy to treat primary and secondary causes of vertigo. It is an exercise based program combined with mobilisation of the head and body to correct deficiencies within the vestibular system and strengthen the processing of balance information in the brain.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury that can occur when your head quickly moves backward and then forward (similar to the motion of someone cracking a whip). These extreme forces may result in bony or soft tissue injuries such as discs, ligaments, tendons, neck muscles and nerve roots.

What are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

The most common symptom is Neck Pain. Other symptoms that may be experienced include:

  • Headaches
  • Loss of motion in the neck
  • Pain in the Shoulder and Arms
  • Dizziness or altered sensation, such as pins and needles
  • Weakness in the arms
  • Pain in the shoulders
  • Pain between the shoulder blades
  • Pain in one or both arms
  • Fatigue
  • Vision problems
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Poor concentration or memory
  • Neck pain/stiffness
  • Tenderness in the muscles
  • If you have experienced this type of movement and suffer from any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) and it is recommended that you seek professional advice.
How can the Physio’s @ Sports & Spinal help me with Whiplash recovery?

The main focus for both our clinics is Headache, Neck and Jaw conditions, with over 80% of our client base being treated for these conditions. We understand that each person is an individual, requiring their own recovery treatment program.

Our aim is to make a full assessment, help relieve the initial symptoms, and then assist in the recovery of your injury by fixing the problem. In some cases, this may require working with other healthcare professionals.

Our highly trained physiotherapists can assist by conducting a complete assessment of the injury and, in collaboration, will set out a full treatment, education and exercise program.

Treatment may include a combination of passive joint mobilisation, spinal manipulation and exercises. Dry Needling or laser treatment may be applied to help relieve the symptoms.

Our physiotherapists will explain in detail the outcome of your assessment, collaborate with you on what is required, and set out a program of setting future appointments for ongoing treatment providing written information and ongoing education instructions on exercises to help heal and strengthen the neck.

What is TMJ?

The jaw is one of our most used body parts – it is involved with eating, talking, breathing and, probably most importantly, expressing our feelings and emotions. This doesn’t even include its extra uses as a hair and gum chewer, extra hand, headrest and bottle-opener.

Because of its importance, and the stressors to which it is exposed, things can go wrong, and it can hurt. So what is happening here?

The TMJ or Temporo-Mandibular Joint

Discussion about jaw pain invariably involves the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, and this is warranted. The TMJ is a complex joint both in structure and function and serves as the “hinge” around which the jaw moves. I say hinge in quotes because the movement here is not as simple, and this is often where problems arise. The movement is a bit of a roll, and a bit of slide which is governed by a system of muscles, ligaments and a cartilaginous disk which sits between the two bones.

So what goes wrong? The joint can get irritated and inflamed, the disc can get struck forward, and the joint can get stiff – or the opposite, and have way too much movement – and you end up in severe discomfort, contemplating a soup diet. BUT, Jaw pain is not always coming from the joints themselves.

At The Headache, Neck & Jaw Clinic, we understand jaw pain is multifactorial and can assess whether the TMJs are dysfunctional if the pain is due to external muscular issues, neural sensitivity, a neck problem, or in most cases a combination.

We enjoy working with the challenges of facial and jaw pain and dysfunction and enjoy the successes that come with it being our concentration of treatment. If you have jaw pain or are worried about a stiff or clicky jaw, please give us a call today or book online now.

What are the Symptoms of TMJ?

Some of the symptoms that may be experienced are:

  • Pain or tenderness of the jaw
  • Headache
  • Facial pain
  • Ear pain, ringing in the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in chewing
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Clicking sound or grating sensation when opening the mouth or chewing
How can the Physio’s @ Sports & Spinal help me with TMJ recovery?

The main focus for both our clinics is Headache, Neck and Jaw conditions, with over 80% of our client base being treated for these conditions. We understand that each person is an individual, requiring their own recovery treatment program.

Our aim is to make a full assessment, help relieve the initial symptoms, and then assist in the recovery of your injury by fixing the problem. In some cases, this may require working with other healthcare professionals.
