Five Benefits of Massage in the Winter

Massage in winter

For most of us, winter means hot drinks, extra layers of clothing, more hours spent indoors and less physical activity.
The good news is that a Remedial Massage can be a great tool to help you through the winter season!

The benefits of massage therapy during winter should not be overlooked, and may be exactly what you need to make it through to spring:

  1. Boost Your Immune System

Winter means colds & the flu spread like wildfire but massage can help your body fight these by boosting your immune system. This is through increasing the lymph flow which is loaded with lots of white blood cells which then go and fight infections around the body.

  1. Helps Dry Skin

As the humidity drops in winter the cold, dry air makes the water in your skin evaporate quicker, making your skin drier. The oils and lotions used in massage contain lots of vitamins to nourish & hydrate your skin – making you feel better on the inside & out!

  1. Improve Your Circulation

Your circulation may need a little help if your hands and feet are always chilly or if you’re having some aches and pains in the colder weather. Regular massage can help by enhancing blood flow and body warmth, which in turn increases the flow of oxygen around the body.

  1. Say Bye To Winter Blues

Massage encourages positive changes in the endocrine system where hormones are created. These changes decrease cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone) & increase oxytocin levels (the happy hormone) leading to the release of serotonin and endorphins, relieving the stress and enhancing your mood. Bye, bye winter blues!

  1. De-Stress

Waking up when it is dark and getting home from work when it is also dark can add extra stress into our lives. Some time out for a massage can really help boost your well-being & help to reset the balance in your life by aiding the release of stress.  It will also help to improve your sleep to give you more energy during the busy winter months.

Sports & Spinal have you covered this winter!

About Us

About Sports & Spinal:

With locations throughout the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast, you are in good hands with Sports and Spinal Physio.

From humble beginnings in a small office in Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore, with just one Physiotherapist, the Maroochydore Sports and Spinal Physio Practice has grown from it’s original office to now include 8 locations on the Sunshine Coast, with practices at:

  • Maroochydore
  • Buderim
  • Kawana
  • Nambour
  • Coolum Beach
  • Caloundra
  • Sippy Downs
  • Landsborough

And now Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy have established their services in Brisbane and Gold Coast including:

  • Broadbeach (new location)
  • Chermside
  • Woolloongabba
  • North Lakes
  • Redcliffe
  • Robina
  • Springfield (new location)
  • Broadbeach (new location)

Simon Burley began the original Maroochydore practice in 1992 and is now joined by Practice Partners Sean Campbell, Andrew Duff and Danielle Keogh with Associate Partners Louise Meek in Coolum, Mike Davis in Chermside, Sophie Stewart in Nambour, Laura Perry Maroochydore, Dion Wallace in Kawana, Nathan Craig in Woolloongabba, Bethany Butler in Sippy Downs and Siliva Tufuga in North Lakes.

Today Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy Centres employ over 100 staff, including professional Physiotherapists, Dietitians, Podiatrists, Exercise Physiologists and Remedial Massage Therapists as well as an outstanding Admin team.

Simon feels the key to its success has been the high professionalism of the staff combined with the friendly family atmosphere.

“Many of our physios and staff have been with us over 20 years and our families have grown up together” says Simon. Heidi Wills has been in the office from the beginning (straight from high school at Immanuel College) and physios Briony McSwan & Fiona Rogers have been with us between 17 and 21 years. Many staff for 10+ years.

“Our senior staff have all developed expertise in their area of interest, to create their own specialised programs unique to our patients.”

Our point of difference from other practices is that our senior staff have all developed expertise in their area of interest, doing postgraduate studies to enhance their knowledge and skills. This ensures that you receive the most up-to-date evidence and experienced based care. In a small practice you have to be a “jack of all trades” but in larger clinics, we can specialise and become experts in certain conditions. Our staff will book you with an expert every time.

Massage and Sports Sports & Spinal

Massage and Sport

Massage plays a part in every form of sport or exercise. It can increase endurance, control fatigue and help people feel better when used as part of a regular injury management regime.

Massage can also speed muscle recovery rates as it eliminates irritation caused by metabolic waste, left behind in the muscle after strenuous bouts of exercise. By helping reduce fatigue and aid recovery, massage enables more productive training with longer, more effective workouts. The ultimate spin-offs are better performance with fewer injuries.

Remedial Massage and Injuries Sports & Spinal

Massage and Injuries

Massage also helps recovery from soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains. Everybody experiences some form of stress through work, family, the environment and society. Mental tensions, frustrations and insecurity cause the most damage. Hormones released by stress actually shrink the vessels, inhibiting circulation.

A stressed mind and body means the heart works harder. Breathing becomes rapid and shallow and digestion slows. Nearly every body process is degraded. Studies show stress can cause migraines, hypertension (high blood pressure), depression, some peptic ulcers, etc. In fact, researchers have estimated 80% of disease is stress related. Soothing and relaxing massage therapy can counteract the effects of stress.

What Injuries can Massage Treat?

  • Headaches & migraines
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Sore shoulder and neck
  • Back pain & sciatica
  • Tennis and golfers elbow
  • Sprains, strains and tears
  • Over-use injuries
  • Shin splints

Although a single massage will be enjoyable and beneficial, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments in conjunction with stretching, strengthening exercises and breaking bad habits (prolonged sitting at a desk, lifting incorrectly etc) will bring the most benefits.

Lymphatic Massage @ Sports & Spinal

Lymphatic Massage is commonly referred to as Lymphatic Drainage. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmical massage treatment performed by a specially trained lymphatic massage therapist to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. This helps to rapidly speed up the removal of wastes and toxins from a sluggish lymphatic system. Lymphatic massage can also aids in the prevention of swelling after injury or surgery. It is also thought to provide a major boost to your immune system.

If you had a recent injury or a surgery, suffer from poor circulation or are physically inactive your limbs may be swollen up and your lymphatic system will need help to be effective again.

With manual Lymphatic Drainage lymph vessels are stimulated to open up and collect the excessive fluid which is then directed to the lymph nodes where it is filtered and can re-enter the bloodstream.

In addition, lymph nodes filter waste from our body cells and assist the immune system in building an immune response, that is why manual Lymphatic Drainage is also indicated if you want to boost your defences and detox.

What Conditions May Benefit from a Lymphatic Massage:

Some of the conditions that may benefit from lymphatic drainage massage include:

  • Swollen legs or arms due to fluid retention
  • Swelling of a limb: pre or post-surgery
  • Lymphoedema
  • Post-mastectomy or breast cancer treatment
  • Breast tenderness & congestion
  • Fibromyalgia & Lupus
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Hormonal & emotional imbalances
  • Cellulite fat accumulation
  • Recurrent infections such as colds, flu, tonsillitis, sinus & yeast infections

The Importance of a Well-Functioning Lymphatic System:

The lymphatic system is made up of organs, ducts, nodes and vessels and is considered a vital part of the circulatory system. The clear fluid called lymph is made up of white blood cells including lymphocytes which help the body’s immune system defend against harmful bacteria and cancer cells. Lymph nodes which are found in the neck, abdomen, groin and armpit manufacture the cells that allow the body to remove cancer and fight off infections. Swelling of the lymph nodes, commonly called “swollen glands,” occurs when the lymph nodes manufacture more white blood cells to fight infection.

Lymphatic Massage is available:

Pregnancy Massage @ Sports & Spinal

Pregnancy massage at Sports & Spinal is a combination of relaxation massage and deep tissue. Our massage therapists adapt their techniques to address changes a woman goes through during her pregnancy.

Pregnancy massage helps you by targeting specific areas of the body that needs to be relaxed or allow more movement. As your body changes during this time, it is important to prepare the body and aid the changes instead of trying to fight it. Pregnancy is a joyful time in everyone’s lives but it is also the most taxing on the body so it makes sense to keep your body moving and at optimal health during this time.

As medical studies have shown, a prenatal massage is a great tool for increasing the flow of blood and lymphocyte circulation, that helps reduce the degree of swelling of the body as a whole. It can also reduce muscle pain, spasms, and cramps, as well as trigger point aches. On a psychological level, these massages can help reduce stress and negative emotional factors like anxiety and depression, proving an expecting mother with a refreshed soul and body.

The benefits include:

  • Preparation of muscles required in childbirth.
  • Neck and back pain relief caused by muscle imbalance and imperfect posture.
  • Assist in maintaining proper posture.
  • Emotional support through nurturing touch.
  • Relaxation and decreased insomnia.
  • Lower levels of cramping particularly in the calf muscles.
  • Reduced sciatic pain.
