Remedial massage focuses on identifying the underlying cause of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Remedial massage involves the use of a variety of therapeutic techniques designed to locate and repair damaged areas in your body, such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. Remedial massage can stimulate the blood supply and make joints more mobile. Regular remedial massage will assist in managing recurrent injury or prevention.
Benefits of remedial massage include:
- Relieve muscle tension
- Deep Relaxation
- Increase the range of movement in joints
- Recover from minor injuries
- Reduce stress and headache
- Improve the quality of sleep
- Increase blood circulation
- Promote tissue regeneration
- Reduce scar tissue
- Speed up the removal of toxins and metabolic waste
Sports massage is a type of massage focusing on loosening muscle fibres caused by sport-related tension and helps aid an athlete’s performance. A sports massage is ideal for people who have sport-related massages or want to improve their recovery post sporting events.
Through the use of hands-on techniques to your muscles, massage aims to increase flexibility and decrease pain. Sports massage will often utilise various modalities such as remedial massage, trigger point therapy, cross fibre techniques and deep tissue work.
Sports massages have a range of benefits such as reaching peak performance, helping the muscles to recover correctly and preparing the body for future exercise.
Massage also helps recovery from soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains. Everybody experiences some form of stress through work, family, the environment and society. Mental tensions, frustrations and insecurity cause the most damage. Hormones released by stress shrink the vessels, inhibiting circulation.
A stressed mind and body mean the heart works harder. Breathing becomes rapid and shallow, and digestion slows. Nearly every body process is degraded. Studies show that stress can cause migraines, hypertension (high blood pressure), depression, peptic ulcers, etc. In fact, researchers have estimated 80% of disease is stress-related. Soothing and relaxing massage therapy can counteract the effects of stress.
Injuries massage can treat:
- Headaches & migraines
- Frozen shoulder
- Sore shoulder and neck
- Back pain & sciatica
- Tennis and golfers elbow
- Sprains, strains and tears
- Over-use injuries
- Shin splints
Lymphatic Massage is commonly referred to as Lymphatic Drainage. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmical massage treatment performed by a trained lymphatic massage therapist to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. This helps to rapidly speed up the removal of wastes and toxins from a sluggish lymphatic system. Lymphatic Massage can also aid in the prevention of swelling after injury or surgery. It is also thought to provide a major boost to your immune system.
If you have had a recent injury or surgery, suffer from poor circulation or are physically inactive, your limbs may be swollen up and your lymphatic system will need help to be effective again.
With manual Lymphatic Drainage, lymph vessels are stimulated to open up and collect the excess fluid, which is then directed to the lymph nodes where it is filtered and can re-enter the bloodstream.
In addition, lymph nodes filter waste from our body cells and assist the immune system in building an immune response; that is why manual Lymphatic Drainage is also recommended if you want to boost your immune defences and detox.
Some of the conditions that may benefit from lymphatic drainage massage include:
- Swollen legs or arms due to fluid retention
- Swelling of a limb: pre or post-surgery
- Lymphoedema
- Post-mastectomy or breast cancer treatment
- Breast tenderness & congestion
- Fibromyalgia & Lupus
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Depression & Anxiety
- Hormonal & emotional imbalances
- Cellulite fat accumulation
- Recurrent infections such as colds, flu, tonsillitis, sinus & yeast infections
Pregnancy massage at Sports & Spinal combines relaxation massage and deep tissue. Our massage therapists adapt their techniques to address changes a woman goes through during pregnancy.
Pregnancy massage helps you by targeting specific areas of the body that needs to be relaxed or allow more movement. As your body changes during this time, it is important to prepare the body and aid the changes instead of trying to fight them. Pregnancy is a joyful time in everyone’s lives, but it is also the most taxing on the body, so it makes sense to keep your body moving and at optimal health during this time. Pregnancy or prenatal massage is a type of massage therapy designed to decrease stress/anxiety, reduce swelling in the legs and arms, improve circulation and reduce musculoskeletal aches and pains.
During pregnancy, many women experience low back, pelvic and buttock pain due to hormonal changes and the additional load placed on their body due to their growing baby.
Women who undergo massage therapy during pregnancy consistently report decreased anxiety, stress, leg pain, lower back pain and improved sleep. Pregnancy massage has even proved to be effective during labour in managing pain and improving the emotional experience that labour can bring on.
The benefits include:
- Preparation of muscles required in childbirth.
- Neck and back pain relief is caused by muscle imbalance and imperfect posture.
- Assist in maintaining proper posture.
- Emotional support through nurturing touch.
- Relaxation and decreased insomnia.
- Lower levels of cramping, particularly in the calf muscles.
- Reduced sciatic pain.

Remedial Massage Therapist
With over five years of dedicated experience as a Remedial Massage Therapist, Josh has a keen interest in helping clients find lasting relief from pain and movement restrictions. He has successfully treated a diverse range of conditions and clients, including:
- Elite athletes and sports-related injuries
- Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation
- General muscular tightness, tension, and everyday aches
- Chronic pain and complex, long-standing issues
Josh brings a deep personal understanding to his work. Growing up as an active sports enthusiast, he experienced first hand the frustration and limitations that injuries and persistent pain can impose. Repeated injuries sparked his curiosity about rehabilitation and recovery, and he was continually impressed by how skilled hands-on therapy, strategic bodywork, and collaborative care could transform pain into freedom of movement—often in a single session.
This personal journey inspired him to pursue a career focused on empowering others to understand and reduce their pain, regain function, and return to a more comfortable, active life.
In recent years, Josh has broadened his expertise while living and working across Canada. He treated clients in varied clinical and wellness settings, all while embracing an active lifestyle—snowboarding through the winters and enjoying hiking and surfing in the summers. This ongoing commitment to movement keeps him attuned to the physical demands people place on their bodies and fuels his passion for effective, evidence-informed massage therapy.
Josh is approachable, curious, and genuinely invested in each client’s progress. Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing chronic discomfort, preparing for or healing after surgery, or simply seeking relief from tightness and stress, he tailors every treatment to your individual needs and goals.

What Coolum Patients Say
Had some pretty intense sciatica pain. Rob was able to help me get ready for my Brisbane to Vancouver flight. This was my very first remedial massage. 100% amazing!
Finding a medical clinic that is genuinely helpful has been a real challenge for me personally, as I deal with chronic back pain from an injury and chronic migraines. The friendly reception staff make you feel so welcome every single time – it truly doesn’t go unnoticed. Leah is an incredible massage therapist who has helped me so much with my neck pain, back pain, and migraines. Kate, the physiotherapist, has also been amazing in supporting my recovery with stretches, massage, and acupuncture. It has taken me over a year to find someone worth seeing, and I only wish I had started going sooner. I can’t recommend COOLUM Sports & Spinal enough! Friendly, professional, and they actually help you!! Thank you – Cassandra.
Kate was phenomenal!!! I incurred a groin injury during an ice hockey game, and was worried that my season was n jeopardy. Turns out it was a significant tear. But thanks to Kate’s treatment plan, positivity and hands on approach, I made a full recovery faster than my expectations!! Can’t thank her enough, or more highly recommend her as a physio!
This is without a doubt the most welcoming, friendly and beautiful physiotherapy practice I have ever been to. With a growing multi-modal team of physio’s, exercise physiologists, dietitians, psychologists, podiatrist and remedial massage therapists, Sports and Spinal Coolum is becoming more of a wellness hub than a physio practice. Look no further this team has your back …and your shoulders, and your knees 🙂
One of the first times I’ve ever come out of a medical establishment feeling genuinely improved, it is unfortunate Dr. Rod is retiring, many sore bodys will miss his healing hands
What a wonderful place to heal! The staff not only excel at their professions but are friendly and welcoming as well.
After suffering knee and lower back pain for a long time it was relieved enormously after treatment from Physiotherapist Louise and a new approach in the gym designed by Sophie the Exercise Physiologist.
I have also improved my health and well being by seeing Candice the Dietitian and feel so much better for it! Not only have I lost weight but my blood pressure is down as is my cholesterol thanks to an ever evolving plan and oversight with regular appointments.
I recommend Sports and Spinal Coolum to everyone!
The staff at Sports and Spinal are knowledgeable and professional, thanks to them I have been able to keep surfing despite my injuries.
I found a physio Kate who was recommended to help me from bilateral knee surgery. Kate was great, she listened and encouraged a very determined patient get my mobility back and get back to work. Thankyou very much Kate, your professionalism, your work out programs and settle and frank assessments were very appreciated. I highly recommend anyone to give Coolum Sports & Spinal a call.
Thanks everyone Thanks Kate Well Done.
The Coolum Admin team are second to none! such a wonderful group of ladies and very helpful! I can’t fault the clinical advice I recieved. Koren put me on the right track and gave me the tools to make a great recovery.
I have going to Sports & Spinal Coolum for approximately 7 years. I was a broken down shell of a man with multiple physical & psychological issues. Sports & Spinal Coolum in particular Ms Louise Meek has played a huge role in getting me back to being healthy & having a great quality of life again.
