Sports & Spinal Coolum is located on the beautiful Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, conveniently located near Peregian Beach, Yandina, and Mudjimba.

With a strong focus on core conditioning, breathing and body awareness, our Core, Strength & Mobility (CSM) classes provide a safe and highly effective way to improve flexibility, strength and control without adding bulk or placing unnecessary stress on your joints.

Classes incorporate a variety of exercises designed to develop balance, power, strength and stability. Sessions can be completed using specialised Pilates equipment — including reformers, trapeze tables and exercise balls — in our CSM Studio classes, or in mat-based classes that utilise bodyweight and minimal equipment.

Programs are individually tailored and progressively adjusted using clear clinical criteria, making CSM suitable for rehabilitation, injury prevention, or maintaining strength after physiotherapy. From your first session, we provide ongoing guidance and education so you continue to move better, feel stronger and build confidence in your body.

Our Core, Strength & Mobility classes are designed as a sustainable fitness approach for life. They are the perfect complement to cardiovascular exercise, sport and rehabilitation, helping you feel toned, energised and moving with ease.

Both Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists with Clinical Pilates experience lead our classes. Clinical Pilates refers to personalised, one-on-one Pilates often used in injury rehabilitation and alongside physiotherapy treatment. At Sports & Spinal Coolum, we offer both individual and class-based options to suit your specific needs.

All participants are required to complete an initial assessment with a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist before joining a class. This allows us to introduce you safely to equipment and exercises, while identifying any injuries or movement restrictions to ensure your program is appropriate and effective.

Sessions are delivered within a clinical environment to ensure the right level of supervision, technique correction and progression.

Sports & Spinal Coolum is NDIS registered and accepts Medicare rebates and HICAPS health fund claims. EFTPOS and credit card facilities are also available for payment.

Core, Strength & Mobility classes are perfect for toning and reshaping the body. It works on creating long, lean muscles, toning all of those hard to target areas such as the abdominals, inner thighs, buttocks, back of thighs, sides and backs of the arms. For toning, these classes are best performed 3 to 5 times a week through a combination of studio sessions, mat classes and home exercises.

Pilates exercises are performed through a wide range of movements and work on lengthening the muscles at the same time as strengthening them. To increase flexibility, stretching exercises need to be performed daily.

The Clinical Pilates exercises used in our Core, Strength & Mobility classes focus on strengthening the weakened postural muscles and stretching the tight muscles that pull the body into these poor postures. Studio sessions are the best way to improve posture as our physiotherapists can develop a program to target your specific postural problems. Pilates can also be used for back pain as it relaxes and strengthens the muscles, easing the discomfort.

Our Core, Strength & Mobility classes use Clinical Pilates techniques which are fantastic for injury rehabilitation and prevention as it works on core stability, posture, flexibility, and correcting muscle imbalances and weaknesses via specific strengthening. It can be used for arthritis, neck pain, back pain and various injuries.

Pilates is the secret tool that many high level and recreational athletes use to enhance their performance, decrease the risk of injuries and provide much-needed cross-training. Each sport has specific strength and flexibility requirements. When you book in for an assessment, your physiotherapist will look at the things you need to work on to improve your performance and then proceed to design a Pilates program for you.

Samuel Gillespie

Physiotherapist - Sports & General

Originally from Dalby and a graduate of the University of Queensland with honours, Sam built his clinical foundation where it counts: on the side line and in the rehab room. His 12-month internship with the South Logan Magpies gave him hands-on experience in acute injury management, injury prevention, and high-performance return-to-sport rehabilitation, skills he now brings to every patient he treats, whether they’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior.

Sam’s passions and areas of specialty include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Concussion
  • Neck and back pain
  • Shoulder pain

He has a particular talent for helping active people get back to the sport, training, or lifestyle they love. His approach is direct, evidence-based, and built around your goals. Sam takes the time to understand what you want to achieve, then builds a rehabilitation program designed to get you there and keep you there.

We are very lucky to now call Sam a Sunshine Coast local! Sam enjoys golf, rugby, and spending time outdoors with family and friends. Kate was phenomenal!!! I incurred a groin injury during an ice hockey game, and was worried that my season was n jeopardy. Turns out it was a significant tear. But thanks to Kate’s treatment plan, positivity and hands on approach, I made a full recovery faster than my expectations!! Can’t thank her enough, or more highly recommend her as a physio!

Finding a medical clinic that is genuinely helpful has been a real challenge for me personally, as I deal with chronic back pain from an injury and chronic migraines. The friendly reception staff make you feel so welcome every single time – it truly doesn’t go unnoticed. Leah is an incredible massage therapist who has helped me so much with my neck pain, back pain, and migraines. Kate, the physiotherapist, has also been amazing in supporting my recovery with stretches, massage, and acupuncture. It has taken me over a year to find someone worth seeing, and I only wish I had started going sooner. I can’t recommend COOLUM Sports & Spinal enough! Friendly, professional, and they actually help you!! Thank you – Cassandra.

What a wonderful place to heal! The staff not only excel at their professions but are friendly and welcoming as well.

After suffering knee and lower back pain for a long time it was relieved enormously after treatment from Physiotherapist Louise and a new approach in the gym designed by Sophie the Exercise Physiologist.

I have also improved my health and well being by seeing Candice the Dietitian and feel so much better for it! Not only have I lost weight but my blood pressure is down as is my cholesterol thanks to an ever evolving plan and oversight with regular appointments.

I recommend Sports and Spinal Coolum to everyone!

It’s hard to believe we’re almost eight months into the year!

To our 2026 New Grad cohort, we couldn’t be prouder of everything you’ve achieved.

Over the past few months, we’ve watched you grow in confidence, embrace every learning opportunity and build meaningful relationships with your patients. Seeing your appointment books fill, hearing the positive feedback from patients and colleagues, and watching you settle into your teams has been incredibly rewarding.

Recently, we also came together for our Mid-Year Refresher Training, taking time to reflect, reconnect and continue building on everything you've learned so far. Supporting our New Grads doesn't stop after orientation, it's something we're committed to throughout the year and beyond.

You're doing an incredible job, and we can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.

Australia is facing a chronic shortage of healthcare professionals, and we urgently need more graduates entering the allied health workforce.

To qualify, students across occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and other allied health professions are required to complete hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of hours of mandatory unpaid clinical placement.

Many experience significant financial hardship during this time, often referred to as 'placement poverty', due to lost income and the added costs of travel, accommodation, food and other living expenses.

To help address this issue, Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA) has launched a national petition calling for the Commonwealth Prac Payment to be expanded to all allied health students.

We encourage you to support the next generation of allied health professionals by signing the petition and helping end placement poverty.
