What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) ?

IBS refers to a collection of symptoms including diarrhoea and/or constipation as well as accompanying symptoms such as bloating and abdominal pain. The cause of IBS is not really known, but a number of factors appear to worsen symptoms. These can include some of the foods we eat, stress or an infection.

How can a Dietitian help people with IBS?

Diet plays a big role in managing IBS as we can modify the diet to identify any “trigger” foods which may make IBS symptoms worse. This process is called the FODMAP diet. Our dietitians have a particular interest in the FODMAP diet and would love to help you to minimise your IBS symptoms to limit the impact they are having on your life! We also ensure that you are eating a healthy variety of foods and not missing out on any important nutrients.

There is so much information available on different food products, what we should & shouldn’t eat and what new diet is taking over as the latest craze. It is important not to put your body in harm’s way and to ensure you are only taking on advice which is evidence-based and accurate. Achieving a healthy weight is important to reduce your risk of many co-morbidities such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease etc. It is also important to make sure you do so in a healthy way by making small, sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle.
